Frequently Asked Questions

When does the football season start?

Practice starts the second week of August. The first week of practice will be conditioning.

When are games played?

Games are generally played on Sunday mornings from early September through November.

Third and fourth graders play at 10:30, followed by the fifth and sixth grade team at noon and the seventh and eighth graders play at 1:30 p.m.

When are practices?

WYFC has reserved a field at Wakefield High School.  A team’s head coach will determine the specific practice days, which generally will run for 90-120 minutes, 3 times per week.

What happens at the first few practices?

The first week of practice are for conditioning, and are non-contact. Players should wear t-shirt, shorts, and cleats.  The players are grouped together by grade, and will do practice as one grade based group. After one week of conditioning practice, practice will start with full pads, (helmets, shoulder pads etc). Every player is required to a complete a week of conditioning before they can have contact.  Coaches will lead the program, under a structured  practice environment.

What position will my child play? Is there an "equal playing time rule"?

WYFC's first concern is the safety of the players. We believe every player should get a chance to play either on the offensive or defensive side of the ball or on special teams.  It’s left up to the team's coaching staff to place each player in a position in which they will succeed and have fun.  All players will learn multiple positions during the season.  If you have any questions about the position your child is playing, please speak with your child’s coach.

Do I have to buy equipment?

We will supply each football player a helmet, shoulder pads, knee and thigh pads, mouth guard, practice pants and jersey, game pants and jersey.  You will be responsible for supplying the other necessary items. These items include a cup, girdle (for game uniform), rib pads (if desired), and football cleats. Other optional items include arm pads, receiving gloves, equipment bag, etc.
